Social Integration After Returning
Community Support for Returning Hungarians
Returning home is not only a logistical process but also an emotional and social challenge. During the first weeks and months of restarting their lives, many people realize that social integration as a returnee is far more difficult than they had expected. The home environment does not always welcome the experience gained abroad with openness. Misunderstanding, indifference, and sometimes even rejection are common experiences.
Why Is Social Integration Difficult for Returnees?
Many people believe that those who stayed at home are fully informed about global developments through social media and the internet. However, this assumption is misleading. Returning Hungarians often find that their experiences, perspectives, and worldview are not met with curiosity but rather with suspicion or cynical responses, such as “Why did you come back? Everyone is trying to leave this place.”
This kind of attitude can be particularly painful for those who, after many years abroad, made the decision to return and build their lives again in Hungary.
Social Distance and the Information Gap
Many returnees often feel that they have become “strangers” in their own country. The constructive dialogue, open exchange of opinions and critical thinking that people who become accustomed to abroad often do not find social acceptance in Hungary. Instead, extreme reactions, destructive public discourse, and general dissatisfaction are common, which further increase uncertainty among newly returned individuals.
What Is Needed for Successful Reintegration After Returning Home?
The most important element is the creation of a safe and supportive online space, where returnees can genuinely share their experiences—whether positive or negative. A space where constructive intentions prevail instead of blame. A place where information comes directly from firsthand experience, rather than through distortions.
A New Platform to Support the Social Integration of Returnees
The goal of the Hazatartók Association is to create an online community platform that:
Functions as a forum where returnees can share their questions, dilemmas, and successes.
Encourages meaningful discussion and constructive dialogue about experiences gained abroad.
Provides space for presenting the “Hazaváró” government program, complemented with expanded information and practical answers.
Presents the real everyday realities of living abroad, offering a more balanced perspective to the public.
Also provides space for residents in Hungary to engage with returnees through their questions and curiosity—in a moderated and constructive environment.
What Makes This Initiative Unique?
This online platform is designed not only to fill the information gap but also to address the most important challenges of social integration after returning home. It helps ensure that you are not left alone and helps you understand that the problem is not you but the shortcomings of the system. We are creating a place where, after returning home, you can find a new community—and a place where you no longer have to justify your decision to live in Hungary.
A Community That Keeps You Connected
The goal is to build a strong, active, and positive community for those returning home. Together, we can demonstrate that life at home offers real opportunities—and that the knowledge, openness, and experience gained abroad are not disadvantages, but valuable assets.
